Overview
Buying consistency, not media
A cocopeat disc costs more per litre of media than a block. Anyone comparing on that number alone will buy blocks. The reason discs exist is that media cost is not the number that matters in a propagation operation — labour and consistency are.
Filling trays from bulk means hydrating, mixing, filling, striking off and cleaning up. It means variation between cavities depending on who filled the tray and how hard they pressed. A disc removes all of it: place one per cavity, water, and every cell in the tray has identical media volume at identical density. That uniformity feeds straight through to uniform germination.
The honest position is that this trade only makes sense for some operations. If you are filling 200,000 plugs a cycle with a mechanised line already calibrated and running, blocks are almost certainly cheaper and discs solve a problem you do not have. If you are propagating high-value material where a failed cell costs more than the media, or running without automation, or short on skilled labour in the filling window — discs earn their premium.

Disc diameters are nominal and expansion varies with density, water temperature and hydration time. A disc that is slightly undersized leaves air gaps at the cavity wall; oversized discs mound and interfere with seeding. Confirm the match against your actual tray before bulk order — and request samples.

Discs are the more expensive way to buy cocopeat and the cheaper way to fill a tray. Whether that trade works depends entirely on what your bottleneck actually is.
- Uniform cell density. Every cavity identical. This is the benefit — germination uniformity follows directly from it.
- Filling labour eliminated. No hydration station, no mixing, no striking off, no cleanup crew.
- Lower skill requirement. A disc does not care who places it. Hand filling quality varies with the operator.
- Less media waste. No spill, no over-fill, no leftover hydrated media going to waste at end of shift.
- Faster changeover. Switching cavity size means switching disc size, not recalibrating a filling line.
- Cleaner workspace. Dry handling until the moment of watering — a real difference in a small propagation house.

Common questions
Neither is better — they solve different problems. Blocks are cheaper per litre of media and are the right answer if you have a mechanised filling line running well or a large, skilled filling crew. Discs cost more per litre and buy you uniformity and the removal of filling labour. If you are running high volume with automation already calibrated, discs are solving a problem you do not have. If you are propagating high-value material, working without automation, or short on labour in the filling window, discs earn the premium.
By the cavity dimension, not the cavity count. Two trays with the same cavity count can have different cavity geometry. An undersized disc leaves air gaps at the cavity wall where roots dry out; an oversized one mounds above the rim and interferes with seeding and watering. Send us the actual cavity dimension — or better, send a tray — and request samples before you commit to a bulk order.
Yes, and for the same reasons. The disc is compressed coir pith, so it carries the same sodium and potassium issues as any other coir product. Washing removes the soluble salt load and buffering pre-loads the exchange sites with calcium. Do not assume a disc is buffered because it is a premium format — ask for the batch EC figure exactly as you would with a block.
Enough to fully expand it in the cavity without flooding the tray. The right volume depends on disc size and density, and is best established by running a tray before committing to a schedule. Under-watering leaves a partially expanded disc with a hard core that roots will not penetrate — a common and easily avoided failure. Water until expansion is complete and the media is uniformly moist through the full depth.
Sometimes, depending on cell geometry. Trainer cells are deeper and narrower than plug cavities, and a disc sized to expand into a shallow cavity will not necessarily fill a deep cell correctly — you can end up with well-filled top and loose base, which defeats the air pruning. For most root trainer applications, blended block media is the more reliable fill. Ask us before assuming discs will transfer.
