The filter decides everything

Ask a grower why their drip system failed and you will hear about emitter quality. Look at the system and you will find the filter — undersized, wrong type for the water source, or not there at all. Almost every drip failure in India is a filtration failure wearing an emitter costume.

Drip emitters have apertures measured in fractions of a millimetre. Indian surface water carries silt, sand and algae; borewell water carries dissolved iron and carbonates that precipitate inside the lateral. The filter is not an accessory — it is the component the entire system depends on, and it has to match the water source. Screen filters for clean borewell, disc for moderate loading, sand media for surface water and ponds. Get it wrong and you are unblocking emitters by hand within a season.

The second thing that gets skipped is hydraulics. Lateral length is not a preference — pressure drops along the run, and past a certain length the far end emits meaningfully less than the near end. On undulating ground, elevation adds or subtracts pressure on top of that. This is why 12mm versus 16mm is a calculation, not a budget decision, and why a plot that needs re-zoning cannot be fixed by upsizing the pipe.

We design against your terrain, water source and crop, then quote the components. Anyone selling you drip by the metre without asking about your water has not designed anything.

Water quality in particular must be assessed before filter specification; a water test is worth doing before you buy anything. We design first and quote against the design.

Advantages

What a designed system returns

Micro-irrigation is usually justified on water saving. That is real, but it undersells it — the bigger return is uniformity and the ability to fertigate precisely.

  • Water applied where the roots are. Not on the paths, not on the weeds, not into the air. This is the saving.
  • Uniformity across the plot. Correct hydraulics mean the far end yields like the near end. Uneven water means uneven crop.
  • Fertigation becomes possible. Feed delivered to the root zone in solution, dosed precisely, at the growth stage you choose.
  • Weeds get less water. Targeted delivery starves the inter-row — particularly valuable with mulch film.
  • Foliage stays dry. Unlike overhead irrigation, drip does not create the leaf wetness that fungal disease needs.
  • Pumping cost down. Less water moved means less energy, which on a diesel pump is a direct and immediate saving.

Common questions

Filtration, almost always. Emitter apertures are fractions of a millimetre and Indian water is rarely clean — surface water carries silt, sand and algae, and borewell water carries dissolved iron and carbonates that precipitate inside the lateral where you cannot see them. If the filter is undersized, the wrong type for the source, or absent, the system blocks. Growers then blame emitter quality and buy better emitters, which block too. Get a water test done before you buy anything, and specify the filter against the result.

It is a hydraulic calculation, not a budget decision, and treating it as the latter is how plots end up with a healthy near end and a starved far end. Pressure drops along a lateral run — past a certain length the far emitters deliver meaningfully less than the near ones. Larger diameter reduces the drop and allows longer runs. On undulating ground, elevation adds or subtracts pressure on top of that. Send us your plot dimensions and topography and we will calculate it. If the run is too long for either diameter, the answer is re-zoning, not upsizing.

On undulating ground, yes — that is exactly what they are for. A standard emitter delivers more under higher pressure, so on a slope the bottom of the run over-waters while the top under-waters, and no amount of scheduling fixes it. Pressure-compensating emitters hold flow constant across a pressure range. On genuinely flat ground with short runs, standard emitters are adequate and cheaper. Be honest about how flat your plot actually is.

Usually yes, and it is worth planning for even if you do not install it immediately. Venturi injectors and dosing pumps integrate at the headworks, so the main requirement is that the filtration and hydraulics were designed to accommodate it. Tell us at design stage if fertigation is on the roadmap — it is cheap to design for and awkward to retrofit into a system that was not.

It depends on what you are comparing against, your soil, your crop and your climate, and any supplier quoting you a single percentage figure is reciting marketing rather than doing arithmetic. Against flood irrigation the difference is large; against a well-run sprinkler system it is smaller. The mechanism is straightforward: water goes to the root zone rather than the paths, the inter-row and the atmosphere. Combined with mulch film, the reduction is larger still. We would rather design your system and let you measure it than quote you a number we made up.
